One of the hardest parts about choosing replacement windows is understanding the differences between each type. Here's a quick breakdown of some of the more popular choices.

  • Horizontal Slider: These are similar to single-hung windows, but the window opens horizontally rather than vertically.
  • Casement: Similar to a door, these windows have a hinge on one side and open outward.
  • Awning: Similar to casement windows, the hinge on an awning window is at the top, so the window opens from the bottom and opens outward.
  • Single-Hung: One of the most common types of windows, the bottom half, or sash, can be opened by sliding the window up, but the top cannot be opened.
  • Double-Hung: Typically the same shape as single-hung, but both the top and bottom half of the window can be opened.
  • Hopper: The opposite of an awning window, the hinge is at the bottom and the window opens inward from the top.
  • Fixed/Picture: These windows don't open, but are often installed with windows that do open on either side of the window to allow for airflow.
  • Bay Windows: This is more of a style of window, made with a combination of three windows that extends outward from the house.

Your window services company will also need to know if you want grids on the windows. Window grids divide the window, giving it a classic look. There are several options available and the team at Smart Roof can help you decide which fits your home, style, and budget.

Window Materials

Another important decision that will need to be made is what material you want for the windows. Common options include vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass, and wood.

  • Vinyl: Vinyl windows are definitely one of the most popular materials for replacement windows. They are an affordable option known for being easy to maintain, they are well insulated, and easy to operate. The one drawback to vinyl windows is that they only come in white and tan. However, these colors are better at reflecting heat.
  • Aluminum: Even though aluminum windows don't offer the same insulating properties as vinyl, they can be a good choice if you're only replacing a few windows and not all of them. This will ensure that the new windows look as close as possible to the old ones. When you upgrade old single glazed windows to new dual glazed with Low-E glass, there can be an improvement in insulation (more on this below).
  • Fiberglass: Fiberglass also insulates well, is low maintenance, and can be painted, which is a benefit if you want to repaint your home's siding in the future. The disadvantage of fiberglass is that they are a more expensive option.
  • Wood: Wood is still an option, but is becoming less popular as it requires regular painting to keep them looking new. Wood windows are often chosen to maintain a certain aesthetic, and are often installed with either aluminum or vinyl exterior cladding, which is a frame for the window.

Window Replacement Cost

As with many home improvement project costs, the cost can vary depending on certain factors. With new window installation, it will depend on how many windows, the size and type of window, the material, glass type, and other features, such as the type of grid. Generally, homeowners in the Detroit area can expect to pay between $150 and $750 per window.

Aluminum windows will be the least expensive option, usually around $150 per window. Vinyl and wood windows can cost between $400 and $600, and fiberglass windows can cost between $500 and $1,500.

There is also a range in cost depending on the type of window that is being installed.

  • Single-Hung: $150 - $360
  • Double-Hung: $300 - $850
  • Awning: $400 - $750
  • Picture: $350 - $800
  • Casement: $250 - $750

When you work with Smart Roof, you can rest assured that we will find an option that fits the needs of your home as well as your budget.

Energy-Efficiency, Glass Options, and Storm windows

Even though there is the word "storm" in the name, storm windows have little to do with gaining additional protection from storms, and have more to do with energy-efficiency. If reducing your home's energy bill is a priority with your window replacement project, you'll want to look at the options for different types of glass and storm windows.

  • Single Glazed vs Dual Glazed: Single glazed windows have one window pane, or one layer of glass; dual-glazed, or dual-pane windows have two layers of glass with a sealed layer of air between them. Dual-glazed windows are much better at insulating your home, but the sealed layer of air will fail, somewhere between 15 and 20 years. Single-glazed windows will be set for decades unless the glass breaks.
  • Storm Windows: If you don't want a full window replacement, but want to reduce drafts in your single-pane windows, you can have storm windows installed. These essentially add another layer of glass on top of the single pane windows, which prevents cold air from leaking into the house during cold Detroit winters.
  • Low-E Glass: This stands for "low-emissivity." Low-E windows have a coating on the glass that blocks the heat and UV rays from the sun, which keeps your home cooler and prevents fading but still allows a significant amount of light. Many window installation companies consider this the standard, but you can choose to upgrade to high-performance Low-E.
  • Low-Maintenance Coatings: If you don't want to worry about cleaning your windows, low-maintenance coatings can be applied that help the window remain cleaner.
